Listening activities

In our future as teacher, we'll promote listening activities in classroom. How? You have to prepare the listening in three stages:

  • Before (pre listening)
      Key language
      Set context
      Active current
  • While (during listening)
      First and second listening

  • Post-listening

Last day we did a listening activitiy in the classroom in which we could realize how we have to prepare a listening activity.

The theory of multiple intelligence

Do you know that not all the people  learn in the same way? There are nine kinds of intelligences. Each person has a particular development in each intelligence.

Where they can from? They come from our biological proclivities and opportunities to learn.The degree depends on the context and opportunities. Most of  us are able to achieve a high degree of all intelligences.

In the class, the teacher showed us the following video:

Listening activities ^^

Hi, we are back!

Today we are going to show you some listening activities which we can use in our lessons ^^

Why have we choosen this activity? We, as teachers, want that our pupils are be able to use the language (English language in this case) to buy things, to ask for the price, etc. So, we can work all these knowledge in this activity at the same time they're enjoying ^^

* http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/tongue-twisters

Tongue-twister is a very funny activity in which we can develop listening and speaking skills. It's related with the activity that we have mentioned before "If you want to buy, buy, if you don't want to buy, bye bye!".
We focus children's attention on the pronunciation, rhythm and intonation of the phrase.

When children say it more quickly, they have to keep a good pronunciation, Don't forget it!

Expressing the weather and asking for them, is an essential knowledge we have to learn  to our students. With this activity we are teaching in a meaningful way, because they have to listen, to understand and to do something. It is not a passive activity, also it's funny for our learners :)

* http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/songs/were-going-the-zoo

We have chosen this song becuse it uses a lot of extralinguistic information to make the listening activity more comprehensible. The characters use body language (gestures, for example when they say kangaroo and lion), pictures of everything the song says...

A good way to know other cultures and festivities is through a short story. The images that accompain the story help students to understand the message. This is an interesting and funny activity with which students are motivated to learn.

This is a curious activity to develop listening skill. Students will enjoy watching this  funny documentary. The mix between animation and reality will do that children pay attention all the time. They will acquire key vocabulary in a context. Moreover,  the simulation is a good way to make the learning more meaningful.

Planet earth is a short history that show us interesting facts about the world we live in. In addition to developing the listening skill of our students, we can make them see that certain actions manmade  can destroy our world.

* http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/kids-talk/the-green-thing

The green thing is a documentary in which kids talk about that we can do to care the environment. This activity it's related with the above activity, so, children, after listening these sugges, will want carry out them in their house. This documentary, submitted by kids, can attract students attention and the learning about this topic can be succesful.
Of course, it's an activity very interesting in which they can improve their listening skills. :)

We believe that, this listening activity is very useful and encourages students to learn the transports topic, such as, ship, car, train, etc. therefore, we would like to recommend this song because it is more easy learn the transport in this way!
The contents and the vocabulary are easy and above all, it is a catchy song because the verses are very repetitive.

Finally, we have chosen this song because we believe that, it can be very useful and dynamic in an English class and children will developed the skill of listening. This topic is related with the food and it can be a fantastic way to learn differents meals, in an enjoynable way and we can change some verses of the song with others meals which children like it.

Lesson 10.10.12

Well, Today we've seen in classroom different ideas or concepts about oral communication and listening.

Firstly, we spoke about oral communication. We saw the two different kind of oral communication: monologue and dialogue. We think that children build the meaning from their own experiences, moreover they can deduce the meaning through the gestures or tone of the voice of their teacher. They probably understand the global idea although they don understand word by word. So, they use all they know in order to interprate. But not only the children do that, when we are watching an English film, for example, we do the same. On the other hand, is important that we see the discourse as an essential tool in our lesson. But the discourse has a sense, We mean that you have to know why are you writting? You write with an intention.

Secondly, we have learnt more things about listening. Now, we know children need to listen before speaking, they need to know how sound the language. So, they need to listen in order to be able to speak. Moreover, is important to transmite the idea that dont worry if you dont understand everything, sometimes in your mother tongue you dont understand each word that somebody say (in a economic conference, or something like that).

* We want to show you a video wich we found on youtube, is a interview about a English School in Spain which teach English in a funny and creative way. Teachers are speaking English all the time, so they provide rich inputs to their students who are very motivated. The video is from a Spanish TV Programm, so you can see that our students in Spain could learn in another way, not only in the traditional.

First Lesson

Today we have reflected upon individual tasks and we have deduced the following ideas:

* We should design challenge activities.

* A good teacher shoul have a good oral English level and a good level of methodology to teach English.

* Scaffolding is a support that we should remove when the learner does not need it.

* We should avoid using isolated words and set phrases.

* We should propouse use gestures and expressions to make the class more effective and motivated.

Then, we are going to share this scheme about Scaffolding:
